THN/FORB CPR Face Shield Notice
The BCCDC became aware of an inconsistency in the manufacturing of the CPR face shield (breathing masks) included in the BCCDC naloxone program supplies. Specifically, the print-side of the instructions on the CPR face barrier shields (breathing masks) is not consistent in some lots, which could cause confusion when giving breaths. The masks remain safe to use - the instructions themselves are correct, only the print placement is inconsistent. There are no functional faults with the mask.
Current status
- A notice was sent to registered THN and FORB site contacts
- Instructional labels (Image 1) and replacement supplies are available for ordering by sites
- As of September 19, outbound shipments to sites contain vendor-verified masks with the correct print direction

Recommendation for training
- Responder’s side: flat valve for providing breaths.
- Patient’s side: raised oval mouthpiece between teeth.
Actions for sites
- Spot-check on-site inventory.
- Ensure staff and clients are trained in proper use of the mask.
- Consider having replacement face shields or instructional labels for clients/staff upon request. Orders can be submitted to naloxone@bccdc.ca
The BCCDC is working to ensure that training resources consistently reflect the above recommendations and that the issue has been addressed ongoing.
